A RAY OF HOPE FOR INNOCENT SOULS
The Shelter Progetto is a non-profit charitable public Trust that works for the betterment of the lives of children and youth in Gurugram. We believe that every child is precious and needs to be provided a loving and caring environment to grow and mature into young adults.
The Shelter Progetto runs a Child Care Institute that provides both long and short-term homes to children who have experienced abuse, neglect, violence, abandonment and are in need of care and protection. We take care of children of every race, creed, color and religion. The children live in an environment where they feel secure, loved and have a sense of belonging.
The Shelter Progetto also works with children in the slums of Gurugram through Learning Centre’s. These centres provide basic primary education to children to get them ready for formal education in Government schools in the mornings. In the afternoons these centres conduct health camps for the vaccination of children living in these slums.
A LOVING AND CARING CULTURE
At the Shelter with the help of our staff, volunteers and donors we ensure the children are well taken care of in terms of their health, safety, emotional wellbeing by providing a loving and caring home.
LET'S MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER
Bring a ray of hope to these innocent souls
THE TEAM
Our Team was inspired and influenced by their previous experiences as volunteers in Mother Teresa’s Home. Sandra and Saji worked relentlessly for homeless and poor children. This inspired them to start a home where they could provide care, protection and a homely environment for children. After Saji’s demise in 2013 and Sandra’s in 2016, The Shelter is now run by Kim Menezes who is a Trustee of The Shelter Progetto.
WHAT OUR CHILDREN HAVE TO SAY
OTHER INITIATIVES
THE EDU-ASSIST PROGRAM
The Edu-Assist program caters to the basic education needs of the underprivileged. Illiteracy, lack of identification proofs and knowledge of the process for admission into schools by the parents deprives the young children of basic schooling.
The Trust has started enrolling children in three Learning Centres in Sector 74, Gurugram in the age group of 5 to10 years who are not currently enrolled in government schools. Each child is assessed for their level of knowledge and homogeneous groups of children are created. The children are trained with a goal of getting them admission into a government primary school in the subsequent academic year.
The team from the Trust also ensures that the required paperwork for school admission is completed including acquiring Aadhar cards for both parents and children.
This program has been sponsored by ELDECO and #Mission44Million
THE DIGNITY PROGRAM
We at the Trust strongly believe that everyone has the right to live life with dignity and respect.
Our first initiative in this area is a collaborative project FOOD FOR ALL with Bal DiGhent
for the benefit of #Mission44Million. Four lakhs were raised to provide rations to our didis, bhaiyas, drivers, cooks, maalis, chotus, elders who've been the backbones of our homes and our workplaces during the second wave of the COVID pandemic.
Basic necessities such atta, tea, salt, sugar, oil, dal, soya and vegetables prepared as kits were provided to 800 families. The families expressed gratitude for the timely and crucial support extended to them during those difficult times.
THE SKILL-UP PROGRAM
One of the biggest issues faced by the underprivileged youth living in the slums or NGO homes is unemployability due to lack of skills. A problem that gets alleviated due to (a) lack of appropriate guidance; (b) lack of funds; (c) lack of access to skills training.
In the year 2020, the Trust decided to address this issue by providing free of cost skill development training and skill certification to improve the employability of the youth. The objective is to (a) provide skill development training to underprivileged school dropouts, college dropouts and unemployed youth living in slums and NGO’s; and (b) Engage with industry in the implementation of the program leading to improved quality of training along with alignment of training with the needs of the industry.
The first program was launched in collaboration with #Mission44Million, an initiative by Bal DiGhent to help 40 underprivileged youth in the age group 18-25 from Gurgaon to be trained with the required skills to work in the Hospitality Industry in roles such as Guest Service, Barista, Housekeeping, kitchen support which includes Sandwich Hands, Salad Hands, Dishwashing, Opening and Closing preps for Chefs, etc. This program has been sponsored by ELDECO.
The youth will undergo a four month training resulting in placement in restaurants in the Delhi / NCR region.
